Number 1 reason to pack a change of clothes

No.1 reason to pack a change of clothes in your nappy bag

Following on from Total Bag Envy's 15 Nappy Bag Essentials blog, I had some people ask why it’s so important to have a change of clothes in your nappy bag. Well, do I have a story for you!

The only time (and I mean the ONLY time) my friend forgot a change of clothes still makes me cry laughing. She was dropping me off very early one morning at McDonalds to meet up with other friends for a road trip I was going on. We were sitting outside while her 2yr old little boy played in the playground when the most horrendous smell filled the air and put us off our breakfast! It was a shocking smell and we were trying to figure out where on earth this smell could be coming from. We were laughing while we blamed the gardener (thinking he had put out fertiliser), the bins, even the other family near us (only to ourselves but still not our finest moment) and then even made jokes about one of the kids having an ‘accident’ down the slide.

We were thinking we were pretty funny when her 2yr old son came walking over like a cowboy, holding himself, all upset and just looking at us saying “yuck, yuck”.  My friend (who was trying to toilet train) was pretty happy with herself thinking he was telling her that he needed to go to the toilet. We then realised the reason he was walking like a cowboy was because he had poo running down both his legs! We had found the source of the smell! Well, this wasn’t just a poo, it was a poo explosion in a class of its own and we were crying with laughter as we had no idea what to do next. He was all upset because she wouldn’t pick him up for a hug and we were trying to get him into the parents room to get him cleaned up.

Well, it still didn’t stop there! We were trying to get him to lie down to change him to which he put up a big fight. Once we finally lay him down we found out the reason he didn't want to lie down, there was poo all up his back as well! This really was the poo explosion of the century. It was all over his shirt, on his shorts, even his shoes – the poor kid was covered in poo and all his mum and I were doing was wiping away tears of laughter! We managed to clog the toilet, put water everywhere and smell the place out while trying to figure out what to dress him in (the clothes were binned- there was no way she was taking them home) as she had forgotten to put a change of clothes into her nappy bag.  Seeing it was so early there were hardly any shops open and the only boys clothes we could find were boys size 7-8 pyjamas. The poor kid looked ridiculous as we could only put the shirt on (we didn’t even contemplate the pants) and even though he was little then, I still don’t think he has forgiven us. We also haven’t been back to that McDonalds as we also realised after the fact that we didn’t check the slide!

I don’t think I will ever forget that day and I sometimes still crack myself up with tears of laughter just thinking about it (which is a little strange when I’m getting groceries). They say that you learn something every day but I think what I learnt on that day is something I will always take with me. ALWAYS have a spare change of clothes in your nappy bag!
